Windows 11 Specs and System Requirements


Windows 11 is a big upgrade over Windows 10, and with all of the new tools and features comes an increased demand for the system. As a result, it is critical to determine whether your machine is capable of running Windows 11. This page examines the minimal and recommended Windows 11 System Requirements.

The PC Health Check Tool from Microsoft can perform a quick test to determine whether your system is capable of supporting Windows 11. However, this is a test of the bare minimum, not what is required to keep the system running well. Instead, Windows 11 features a slew of new feature-specific hardware requirements. Minimum Hardware Requirements for Windows 11
Windows 11 now has new minimum hardware requirements. PCs that do not match the minimum requirements cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. PCs that meet the soft floor will be notified that an update is not recommended.

1 GHz or faster processor with two or more cores on a suitable 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 system firmware
Graphics card: DirectX 12 or later compatible with WDDM 2.0 driver
Storage: A 64 GB or larger storage device is required.
S mode is only available in the Windows 11 Home edition. If you are running a different edition of Windows in S mode, you must first exit S mode before upgrading.
UPDATE: Microsoft has changed the prerequisites. They now enable unsupported PCs to install but not upgrade to Windows 11.

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor with two or more cores on a suitable 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
4 gigabytes of RAM (GB)
Storage: A 64 GB or larger storage device is required.

System firmware: UEFI with Secure Boot capability
TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 Graphics card: DirectX 12 or later with WDDM compatible Driver 2.0
Display: A high definition (720p) display with a diagonal size greater than 9″ and 8 bits per color channel.
Internet access and Microsoft accounts:
To complete device setup on the first usage, Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account.
Switching a device out of Windows 11 Home in S mode also necessitates internet access.

Internet access is essential for all Windows 11 editions in order to execute updates and download and use some features. Some functions necessitate the use of a Microsoft account.

1] The processor
Windows 11 requires a 1GHz processor with two or more cores and is only compatible with 64-bit platforms. The biggest change for individuals who have worked with Windows 10 is the presence of two or more cores. While many users preferred upgrading to dual-core or better PCs in the late 2000s, a sizable proportion still relied on low-end single-core devices. They’d miss the bus if they used Windows 11. Those using 32-bit PCs would also have to stick with Windows 10.

2] RAM

When evaluating a system’s performance, RAM is frequently the limiting element. When 2GB RAM was barely the minimum need, many system vendors released Windows 10 computers with it (for 64-bit systems). As a result, the majority of customers were forced to increase the RAM in their PCs. With Windows 11 raising the bar to 4GB, you may need to upgrade to 6GB or 8GB of RAM for a pleasant operating system experience.

3] Available Hard Disk Space
Windows 11 requires 64GB of hard drive space. This is substantially more than the 20GB required by Windows 10. (64-bit). Keeping the normal buffer in mind, we recommend that you have at least 100GB of free space on your PC for Windows 11 to run smoothly.

4] Video Card
The system’s graphics card must be DirectX 12 or later compatible with a WDDM 2.0 driver, which is an upgrade over the previous requirement of DirectX9 compatibility for Windows 10 users with WDDM 1.0.

5] Firmware for the System
While this was not previously a requirement, Windows 11 requires UEFI, and Secure Boot capabilities. Perhaps this will phase out many older systems after the general public upgrades to Windows 11.

6] Platform Module of Trust
The presence of Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 on the system is required for the installation of Windows 11. Previously, many systems, including high-end ones, did not offer this option.


7] Showcase
Windows 11 has a specified need for a display that allows for a high definition (720p) display and is 9″ inches or more in size. It is critical to have 8 bits in each color channel. The simple requirement for Windows 10 was a minimum resolution of 800 x 600.

8] Internet Access
We had the option of installing Windows 10 and earlier versions through ISO and external drives. An internet connection was preferred and required for updates, but was not required for installation. This has changed with Windows 11, as the Microsoft website explicitly states that an internet connection is required for the first installation.

According to Microsoft, there are additional requirements for upgrades as well as requirements to enable specific features over time:

A microphone and speaker are required for Multiple Voice Assistant (MVA).
Snap three-column layouts require a screen with a width of 1920 effective pixels or higher.
Mute/Unmute from the Taskbar necessitates the use of a video camera, microphone, and speaker.
An HDR monitor is required for auto HDR.
BitLocker to Go necessitates the use of a USB flash drive.
Client Hyper-V requires a CPU capable of second-level address translation (SLAT).
Cortana requires a microphone and a speaker and is currently only accessible in a few regions on Windows 11.
To store and execute games that use the “Standard NVM Express Controller” driver, DirectStorage requires an NVMe SSD. DirectX 12 Ultimate is accessible with supported games and graphics hardware.
Presence necessitates the use of a sensor capable of detecting human proximity to the gadget or desire to engage with it.
A 5G enabled modem is required for 5G support.
Intelligent Video Conferencing necessitates the use of a video camera, microphone, and speaker (audio output).
Spatial Sound necessitates the use of supporting hardware and software.
A video camera, microphone, and speaker are required for teams (audio output).
Touch necessitates the use of a multi-touch screen or monitor.
Two-factor authentication necessitates the usage of a PIN, biometric, or phone equipped with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Xbox (app) necessitates the creation of an Xbox Live account, which is not available in all territories. Some features are only available if you have an active Xbox Game Pass membership.
Voice typing necessitates the use of a computer equipped with a microphone.
Wake on Voice necessitates the use of a Modern Standby power model and a microphone.
Wi-Fi 6E necessitates the installation of updated WLAN IHV hardware and drivers, as well as a Wi-Fi 6E-enabled AP/router.
For biometric authentication, Windows Hello requires a camera configured for near-infrared (IR) imaging or a fingerprint reader.
A display adapter that supports Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 2.0 and a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi Direct are required for Windows Projection.
The requirements for Windows 11 are significantly higher than those for Windows 10. Most low-end systems may not be eligible for the upgrade, while a large number of high-end but older systems may also be ineligible. Though, as technology advances, it is logical why Microsoft must establish basic standards for safety and performance.
