His grandfather, Hazrat Maulana Khuda Bakhsh, received special permission for reciting the famous book of Duroods, Dalaa’il ul Khayraat Shareef, in Madinat ul Munawwarah during his Hajj journey. He was also known for his spiritual miracles.

Education and Zest for Knowledge

Hazrat Allama Muhammad Amjad Ali initially received his elementary education from his grandfather. Later, he studied under the guidance of his elder brother, Maulana Muhammad Siddique. He pursued higher education at Madrassa Hanafiyah in Jaunpur, a reputable Islamic University at that time. There, he studied under the esteemed scholar Hazrat Allama Maulana Hidayatullah Khan Jaunpuri, who was a student of Hazrat Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khayrabadi.

Graduation with Distinctions

Hazrat Allama Muhammad Amjad Ali graduated with distinctions from Madrasatul Hadith in Pillibhit, specializing in Hadith. He studied under the guidance of Hafizul Hadith, Hujjat ul Asr Allama Wasi Ahmed Surti. His teachers and the management of the Madrassa recognized his intellect and acumen. A Great Muslim Physician

After the passing of Qazi Abdul Waheed, Hazrat Allama Muhammad Amjad Ali did not remain there for long. He traveled to Lucknow, where he pursued the study of Ilm ut Tibb, Islamic Medicine, for two years. Upon completing the course, he returned home and opened a clinic, which quickly gained success.

Hazrat Allama Muhammad Amjad Ali excelled as a Tabeeb (physician) and treated people for their ailments, providing both medical and spiritual advice. His patients held great love and respect for him, and he served them with utmost sincerity, dedicating himself to their well-being.

When Huzoor Muhad’dith e Surti heard that Huzoor Sadrush Shariah had started practicing medicine and opened a clinic, he became saddened. Huzoor Muhad’dith e Surti felt that Huzoor Sadrush Shariah was better suited and more needed in serving the Ummah in matters of Deen (religion) and judicial affairs rather than in the field of medicine. Huzoor Muhad’dith e Surti was a highly regarded scholar and recognized the true worth of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah.

Hazrat Mufti Amjad Ali Aazami Biography in Roman English

In the Court of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat

At that time, Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan required the services of a teacher at the renowned Darul Uloom Manzar e Islam in Bareilly Shareef. Upon the request of Huzoor Muhad’dith e Surti, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah left his clinic and went to Bareilly Shareef. Initially, he served as a teacher at Darul Uloom Manzar e Islam.

Before Huzoor Sadrush Shariah’s visit to Bareilly Shareef from Pillibhit, Huzoor Muhad’dith e Surti wrote a letter to Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan, requesting him to encourage Huzoor Sadrush Shariah to continue in the field of Ilm e Deen (religious knowledge). Within a few months, Imam Ahmed Raza Khan arranged for Huzoor Sadrush Shariah to permanently reside in Bareilly Shareef. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah was entrusted with various responsibilities by Imam Ahmed Raza Khan, including overseeing the educational affairs of Madrassa Manzar e Islam, managing Anjuman Ahl e Sunnat, supervising the printing press, preparing manuscripts, proofreading books, issuing Fatawa, and handling important correspondence.

His Connection to the Court of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat
Due to his exceptional capabilities, sincerity, and devotion, Imam Ahmed Raza admired Huzoor Sadrush Shariah and held him in high esteem. Imam Ahmed Raza had immense trust and faith in him. Hazrat Maulana Hasnain Raza, the son of Allama e Zaman Hazrat Maulana Hasan Raza Khan, expressed that the closeness and connection of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah to the Darbaar of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat were so strong that they considered themselves three brothers—Hujjatul Islam, Hazrat Maulana Hasnain Raza, and Huzoor Mufti e Azam. However, when Huzoor Sadrush Shariah arrived, they became four brothers.

Sadrush Shariah in Ajmer Shareef

With the permission of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat, after approximately fifteen years, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah journeyed to Ajmer Shareef to assume the position of Principal at Darul Uloom Mu’eenia Uthmania. He served there until 1350 Hijri, satisfying the thirst for knowledge of those who sought it.

Students from all corners of the country, especially the most intelligent and bright ones, traveled to Ajmer Shareef to seek knowledge from him. The reputation of Darul Uloom Mu’eenia reached great heights, and students came from Northern Provinces, Bihar, Hyderabad, and other regions to benefit from his teaching methods. Residents of Ajmer Shareef remarked that they had never seen such an atmosphere and environment of learning before.

Huzoor Sadrush Shariah returned to Bareilly Shareef in 1351 and served at Darul Ifta for three years. In 1354, Nawaab Haji Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sherwani, the Governor of Dadon Aligarh, invited him to become the principal at Madrassa Haafizia Sa’eedia, a position he accepted. He remained there for seven years, teaching with sincerity and devotion, and nurturing dynamic and capable scholars.

An Amazing Teacher
Huzoor Sadrush Shariah possessed exceptional teaching skills. In addition to following the prescribed curriculum, he taught various other sciences and books, both within and beyond the syllabus. He explained footnotes and commentaries related to these books, even dedicating time after Madrassa hours to tutor students. He would continue teaching on days when there were no Madrassa sessions.

His teaching style gained prominence throughout the country. He had the ability to simplify complex issues and present them in a manner that even weak students could understand. Such was his expertise that when Aligarh Muslim University planned to establish a department specializing in Eastern education, Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah was appointed as one of the scholars responsible for designing the curriculum.

Allama Abdul Aleem Siddiqi Meerati presented his syllabus draft to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah for correction and guidance. During the Annual Jalsa of Madrassa Haafizia Sa’eedia, Maulana Habibur Rahman Sherwani paid tribute to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, acknowledging his proficiency and professionalism. He stated that only a few teachers in the continent were considered completely proficient and appointed on merit, and Maulana Amjad Ali was among them. The fact that students were becoming accomplished scholars under his guidance and earning certificates of merit was evidence of his expertise.

The Blessing of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah
The blessings of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah’s teachings are evident in his students, who can be found throughout the world, actively propagating Islam. There is hardly a Madrassa or Darul Uloom in the Indo-Pak sub-continent that does not have at least one teacher who has directly or indirectly received his blessings. His contributions to the field of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) are remarkable, and his works stand as glowing proofs of his services. It is no surprise that he excelled in this field, considering his special intelligence and expertise, coupled with the guidance and mentorship of the great Jurist and Imam of the era, Mujad’did e Azam Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan. Imam Ahmed Raza’s expertise and proficiency in Fiqh are acknowledged not only by his followers but also by his critics.

Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Acknowledges Him

Huzoor Sayyidi Aala Hazrat acknowledged and had complete confidence in the understanding of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah regarding matters of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Fatawa (religious rulings). While praising his excellence, Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan stated, “You will find Maulavi Amjad Ali’s understanding of religion, particularly in matters of Fiqh, to be incomparable to others present here. He is proficient in pronouncing, writing, and examining various Fatawa. He accurately transcribes my responses to inquiries on his behalf. He has a receptive nature and effortlessly grasps the essence of the issues at hand. His familiarity with methods and procedures is an asset in his profession.” This acknowledgment from Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan clearly indicates that Huzoor Sadrush Shariah’s expertise as a Mufti (Islamic jurist) was recognized and respected.

Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan admired Huzoor Sadrush Shariah’s dedication and sincerity in his role at Darul Ifta (House of Fatwa) and every other field he was involved in. He tirelessly worked day and night, striving for the betterment of the Ummah (Muslim community). Due to his unwavering commitment and sincerity, Sayyidi Aala Hazrat often referred to him as “Maulana Amjad Ali Saaheb, the Work Machine.”

Acknowledgment by Senior Muftis
When senior scholars of the time encountered difficulties in resolving certain issues, they would present their problems to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, who would comfortably provide solutions. Maulana Israar ur Rahmaan Saaheb of Hyderabad Dakkan once sent a query to him on the 18th of Rajab 1346, which consisted of several complex issues. In the beginning of his inquiry, Maulana Israar ur Rahmaan Saaheb wrote:

“These issues are so complicated that not just anyone will be capable enough to write a satisfactory answer. After much contemplation, I realized that Almighty Allah, through His Grace and Mercy and by the blessings of the Holy Prophet, has made you deserving of this position. May Almighty Allah grant you abundant knowledge, a long life, and blessings, and may Muslims benefit from your wisdom. Aameen Thumma Aameen.”

Other learned and respected personalities, such as Hazrat Maulana Ziaud’deen Pillibhiti, Imam un Nahw Allama Ghulam Jilani Meerati, and Khair ul Azkiya Allama Maulana Ghulam Yazdani Ghoswi, also sought guidance from Huzoor Sadrush Shariah whenever they encountered challenging issues in Fiqh and other areas, which they found difficult to resolve.

Bai’at & Khilafat

Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah took Bai’at (oath of allegiance) at the hands of the Mujaddid (Reviver) of the religion and leader of the Ahl-e-Sunnat, Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan. He was honored with Khilafat (spiritual succession) and Wakaalat (representation) by Sayyidi Aala Hazrat, and esteemed personalities like Sheh Besha Ahle Sunnat, Hazrat Allama Hashmati Ali Khan, also took Bai’at with Sayyidi Aala Hazrat through the blessed hands of Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah remained a true and devoted disciple, dedicated to Sayyidi Aala Hazrat and Bareilly Shareef until his last moments.

The Kanz ul Imaan

Huzoor Sadrush Shariah made significant contributions to the initiation and completion of the world-renowned translation of the Holy Qur’an by Imam Ahmed Raza, titled Kanz ul Imaan, which is considered the most unique Urdu translation of the Holy Qur’an. Sayyidi Aala Hazrat began the translation of the Holy Qur’an, and through the efforts of Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah, the renowned Kanz ul Imaan came into being. Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat would dictate the translation, and Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah would write it down. Thus, the compilation of Kanz ul Imaan was a collaboration between Sayyidi Aala Hazrat and Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah.

Sadrush Shariah

Huzoor Sadrush Shariah was not only intellectually and academically proficient as a religious scholar but also well-versed in the social, political, and economic conditions of the Muslims. Whenever and wherever the need arose, he defended and uplifted the Muslims.

Allah Almighty blessed Huzoor Sadrush Shariah with proficiency in various sciences and branches of knowledge, but he had a particular inclination towards Tafseer (Qur’anic exegesis), Hadith (Prophetic traditions), and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). His expertise in Fiqh is the reason why Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan conferred upon him the title of ‘Sadrush Shariah.’ What more can be said about a personality whom the great Mujaddid of the era referred to as ‘Sadrush Shariah’!

Sharh Ma’ani ul Athaar
Huzoor Sadrush Shariah initially began writing marginal notes on the extensive book by Imam Abu Ja’far Tahaawi on the science of Hadith, titled ‘Sharh Ma’ani ul Athaar.’ In a short period of seven months, he completed a comprehensive annotation of more than four hundred and fifty pages on this masterpiece.

Fatawa Amjadiyah:

Fatawa Amjadiyah is a distinguished work by Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, consisting of four volumes that contain numerous Fatawa (religious rulings) written with great detail. It serves as a reflection of the Fatawa of Sayyidi Aala Hazrat flowing from the pen of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah. Each Fatwa in this compilation provides a clear explanation of the Hanafi school of thought.

The World Renowned Bahaar e Shariat

Bahaar e Shariat is an internationally acclaimed work by Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, which can rightfully be called the Encyclopedia of Hanafi Fiqh. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah wrote seventeen volumes of this twenty-volume book, and his students completed the remaining three volumes after his passing.

Bahaar e Shariat is written in a beautiful and concise manner, making it beneficial not only for scholars but also for the general public. Aala Hazrat Ash Shah Imam Ahmed Raza Khan personally listened to the first six parts of Bahaar e Shariat as Huzoor Sadrush Shariah recited it to him.

After listening to the first six parts, Aala Hazrat mentioned to Sadrush Shariah that he gave his blessings to continue this monumental task, and there was no need to read it to him anymore. This shows the confidence that Imam Ahmed Raza had in the work of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah.

The volumes of Bahaar e Shariat are categorized as follows:

Volume 1: Book of Imaan and Aqaa’id (Correct Beliefs)
Volume 2: Book of Tahaarat (Purification)

I, as a humble servant, have been honored to attempt the translation of Bahaar e Shariat. While doing so, I was amazed by the wisdom, intelligence, judicial prowess, and expertise of Huzoor Sayyidi Sadrush Shariah. He was indeed blessed by Almighty Allah and His Beloved Rasool (peace be upon him) and had gained the special attention of Aala Hazrat.

Endorsement of Bahaar-e-Shariat by Sayyidi Aala Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His servants who adhere to His commandments.

I, the undersigned, have carefully read the esteemed book Bahaar-e-Shariat, which expounds upon the rules of Tahaarat (purification), and is an exceptional compilation authored by my esteemed brother in the religion of Allah, the honorable, dignified, pleasant-natured, profound thinker, and highly respected Maulana Abul Ula Maulavi Hakeem Muhammad Amjad Ali Aazmi Barkaati Qaadiri.

I am grateful to Allah that I have found this book to contain accurate, sound, well-researched, and well-explained rulings. In today’s era, there was a great need for such a book, enabling our fellow brethren in the general public to access correct laws in simple Urdu language, thus safeguarding them from being misguided and led astray by superficial and deceptive practices.

I beseech Allah to bestow upon the author abundant blessings, prolong his life, and increase his righteous deeds. May He guide him to compile a comprehensive book encompassing every aspect of the faith, from beliefs (Aqaa’id) to the essential branches of religion. May this book serve as a valuable contribution, effective, sufficient, and purifying. I pray that Allah makes the author widely recognized among the Ahle Sunnat (followers of the Sunnah), granting him beneficial knowledge and acceptance both in this world and the hereafter.

His Connection to Bareilly Shareef

Huzoor Sadrush Shariah (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) held Bareilly Shareef in high regard, even more than his own home and family. When Huzoor Sayyidi Mufti-e-Azam (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) was preparing to embark on the pilgrimage to Hajj (and it should be noted that in those days, people would be away for three to three and a half months, sometimes even up to four months), Maulana Allama Sardar Ahmed (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) – the beloved friend and colleague of Huzoor Hafiz-e-Millat (may Allah’s mercy be upon him) and one of the two most beloved students of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah – was appointed as the Shaykh ul Hadith at the Madrassa of Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam in Bibi-ji Masjid. Maulana Sardar Ahmed was highly respected and trusted as one of the most reputable scholars in Bareilly Shareef.

At that time, Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam wrote a letter to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, saying that he was leaving for Ziyaarat-e-Haramain Sharifain (the visitation of the Holy Shrines in Mecca and Medina) and Maulana Sardar Ahmed would be accompanying him. Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam mentioned that Bareilly would be left with only two prominent personalities (referring to himself and Maulana Sardar Ahmed). He humbly requested Huzoor Sadrush Shariah to grace Bareilly Shareef with his presence, which would be an act of immense kindness. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah replied to the letter, assuring that he would arrive in Bareilly one day before Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam’s departure.

During this time, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah stayed in Bareilly Shareef continuously for a little over four months. It was during this period that I (Huzoor Muhad’dith-e-Kabeer) personally studied Gulzar-e-Dabista and a few other books under the guidance of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah would also teach at the Madrassa in Bibi-ji Masjid. Upon returning from the Madrassa, he would ask for all the bags (containing queries) of “Chote Maulana” (referring to Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam) to be brought to him. He would dictate the answers, and they would be written down. Even when there was no immediate work, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah would create tasks to avoid idleness. The number of Fatawa (religious rulings) written during that time is still unknown.

Maulavi SubhaanAllah was appointed as the Khaadim (assistant) during this period. He would either dictate the answers to him or listen to the questions and then dictate the responses. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah would also personally respond to the mail he received. He accomplished a great deal of work during this time.

Upon Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam’s return from the pilgrimage, he mentioned that he had opened two boxes of mail and answered all the pending queries. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah remained in Bareilly Shareef for several more days after Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam’s return.

If anyone came seeking assistance during those days, they would approach Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, who would inquire about the purpose of their visit. If they sought Taweez (amulets), he would redirect them to Huzoor Mufti-e-Azam. However, if they had queries regarding Islamic jurisprudence (Mas’ala), he would provide them with the necessary guidance.

I hope this provides you with a clearer and more accurate understanding of the endorsement. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

His Final Journey

Although the Urs Shareef of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, may Allah be pleased with him, begins on the 2nd of Zul-Qadah, he actually departed from this worldly existence on the eve of the 3rd of Zul-Qadah, 1327 Hijri (Islamic calendar), at 12:26 am. He was intending to embark on his second Hajj pilgrimage and Ziyaarat (visiting sacred sites). Maulana Mujeeb ul Islam mentions that while Huzoor Mufti e Azam was preparing for Hajj, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah passed away during this journey. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah had also intended to perform Hajj that year, and he decided to depart from Bareilly Shareef instead of his home.

Even during his final journey, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah journeyed from Bareilly Shareef, demonstrating his deep love for Bareilly Shareef and the Successor of Huzoor Sayyidi Aala Hazrat. This same sincerity, loyalty, and devotion are reflected in his successor, Huzoor Sayyidi Muhad’dith Kabeer Allama Zia ul Mustafa Qaadiri Amjadi.

Huzoor Sayyidi Muhad’dith e Kabeer Qibla shares some details about the final journey of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah. He mentions that Huzoor Sadrush Shariah decided to depart for Hajj from Bareilly Shareef. He arrived in Bareilly Shareef accompanied by his beloved mother. However, he became severely ill and was unable to even stand up by himself.

During this time, someone sent an inquiry to Huzoor Sayyidi Mufti e Azam. Huzoor Sayyidi Mufti e Azam, occupied with making travel arrangements, directed them to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah. The query was presented to Huzoor Sadrush Shariah, who, despite his illness, compassionately responded by dictating the answer.

Personalities like Huzoor Sadrush Shariah came to this world to serve the Deen (religion). Even when they faced illness or remained on their beds, they continued their work for the sake of the Deen. Huzoor Sadrush Shariah remained in his illness until he reached Bombay (now Mumbai). His condition would often render him unconscious.

Huzoor Sayyidi Muhad’dith e Kabeer Qibla further narrates that his beloved mother was with Huzoor Sadrush Shariah during this time. He requested the presence of Allama Arshad ul Qaadiri, who was his maternal uncle. Allama Arshad ul Qaadiri mentions that Huzoor Sadrush Shariah would be unconscious most of the time, but when the time for Salah (prayer) approached, he would regain consciousness. He would command Allama Arshad ul Qaadiri to perform Wudu (ablution) for him and assist him in making Masah (wiping over the head and feet) while lying on his bed.

In this manner, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah performed his Salah while being bedridden. On the day Huzoor Mufti e Azam was departing from Bombay for Hajj, he visited Huzoor Sadrush Shariah. As soon as he entered, Huzoor Sadrush Shariah opened his eyes and asked him if he was leaving. Both of them began to weep, and Huzoor Sadrush Shariah reassured Huzoor Sayyidi Mufti e Azam that he would also be coming. As Huzoor Mufti e Azam departed, the ship’s captain sounded the whistle, and at that moment, the soul of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah departed from his physical body.

Huzoor Sayyidi Muhad’dith e Kabeer Qibla states that Hazrat Maulana Sardar Ahmed wrote a letter addressed to his beloved mother because she couldn’t accompany Huzoor Sadrush Shariah for Hajj due to her return from Bombay. She later went for Hajj once, accompanied by Huzoor Sayyidi Muhad’dith e Kabeer Qibla after he had completed his studies. In the letter from Hazrat Maulana Sardar Ahmed, he mentioned that while performing Tawaf (circumambulation) in Makkah, he would seek the blessed presence of Hazrat Sadrush Shariah. However, every time he approached him, Hazrat Sadrush Shariah would disappear, and the place would be empty. This happened repeatedly.

The blessed resting place (Mazaar Shareef) of Huzoor Sadrush Shariah is located in Madinat ul Ulama Ghosi Shareef, India.
