Sayyidah Fatima az-Zahra (Radi Allahu Anha) holds an incomparably sublime and sacred position in the hearts of Muslims worldwide. As the beloved daughter of the Master of Creation, Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), and the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Khadija al-Kubra (Radi Allahu Anha), her life represents the pinnacle of modesty, spiritual purity, patience, and devotion.
Her life serves as an eternal beacon of light for all Muslim women, illustrating how to navigate the trials of this world while maintaining absolute focus on the hereafter.
Her Blessed Titles and Their Meanings
Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) was blessed with several beautiful, divinely inspired titles that reflected her outer beauty and inner spiritual perfection:
-
Zahra (The Resplendent / Luminous One): She was given this title because of her gleaming, radiant, and luminous face. It is recorded that her countenance was so bright that it seemed to radiate physical and spiritual light.
-
Batool (The Ascetic / Aloof from Worldly Pleasures): This title represents her complete detachment from the materialistic allurements of this temporary world. She spent her days and nights dedicated to the worship of Allah, choosing a life of extreme simplicity and asceticism.
-
Tahira (The Chaste and Pure): This title signifies her absolute modesty, chastity, and purity of heart, mind, and character.
Early Childhood and Deep Attachment to her Father
Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) was an unusually sensitive, intuitive, and mature child. When she was only five years old, she witnessed the historic moment when her noble father was declared the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam).
Her mother, Sayyidah Khadija (Radi Allahu Anha), gently explained to the young Fatima the immense responsibilities, hardships, and divine trials associated with Prophethood. Hearing this, Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) became even more deeply attached to her beloved father, forming a profound and protective love for him.
Despite her tender age, she would bravely accompany him through the narrow, hostile streets of Makkatul Mukarrama. She stood by his side as he visited the Ka’bah or when he attended the highly confidential meetings of the early Muslims who had embraced Islam and pledged allegiance to him.
Unshakable Courage: The Incident at the Ka’bah
When she was approximately ten years old, she accompanied her father to the Masjid al-Haraam. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) began to pray in front of the Ka’bah. Seeing this, a group of hostile Quraysh chiefs gathered around, seeking to humiliate the Prophet.
One of the most wretched among them, Uqbah bin Abi Mu’ayt, brought the heavy, dirty entrails of a slaughtered camel and threw them onto the sacred shoulders of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) while he was in prostration (Sajdah).
Upon hearing of this desecration, the young Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) immediately rushed to the Ka’bah. Without showing a single trace of fear before the powerful chiefs of Makkah, she went up to her father and carefully removed the heavy filth from his back.
Then, standing tall, she turned toward Abu Jahl and his powerful companions, lashing out against them in a firm, confident, and angry voice. Such was the spiritual authority and dignity of this young girl that the powerful leaders of the Quraysh sat frozen, unable to utter a single word in reply.
“Umm Abiha” — The Mother of Her Father
Following the heartbreaking demise of her mother, Sayyidah Khadija (Radi Allahu Anha), Sayyidah Fatima felt an immense responsibility to provide emotional comfort and support to her grieving father. She completely devoted herself to managing his household and looking after his daily needs.
She was so deeply engrossed in her father’s service, anticipating his every comfort, that she earned the famous and touching title: “Umm Abiha” (the mother of her father).
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) reciprocated this devotion with a unique, unparalleled love for Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha). She occupied that special sanctuary of love and esteem in his heart that had previously been occupied solely by her mother, Sayyidah Khadija (Radi Allahu Anha).
Prophetic Sayings (Ahaadeeth) in Her Honor
The vast spiritual station of Sayyidah Fatima Zahra (Radi Allahu Anha) is established through numerous authentic traditions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam).
1. A Part of the Prophet’s Blessed Being
Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhramah (Radi Allahu Anhu) reported that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) declared from the pulpit:
"فاطمة بضعة منى ، فمن أغضبها أغضبنى"
“My daughter is a part of me. He who disturbs her, in fact, disturbs me, and he who offends her offends me.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3767)[1]
This Hadith establishes that her pleasure and anger are directly tied to the pleasure and anger of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), and by extension, to Allah Almighty.
2. Among the Four Greatest Women of the Universe
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) also defined the absolute peaks of womanhood in human history, stating:
"حسبك من نساء العالمين أربع مريم بنت عمران وآسية امرأة فرعون و خديجة بنت خويلد و فاطمة بنت محمد"
“The best women in the entire world are four: The Virgin Maryam (Radi Allahu Anha), daughter of ‘Imran; Aasiya (Radi Allahu Anha), the wife of Pharaoh; Khadija (Radi Allahu Anha), the Mother of the Believers; and Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha), the daughter of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam).” (Mustadrak al-Hakim, Vol. 4, Page 262, Hadith 4745)[2]
3. Absolute Resemblance to the Prophet
Sayyidah Ayesha (Radi Allahu Anha), the Mother of the Believers, observed her character closely and stated:
"أقبلت فاطمة تمشي كأن مشيتها مشي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: مرحباً بابنتي. ثم أجلسها عن يمينه، أو عن شماله"
*”I have not seen anyone of Allah’s creation resemble the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) more closely in speech, conversation, and manner of sitting than Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha).
Whenever the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) saw her approaching, he would welcome her, stand up from his seat, kiss her, take her by the hand, and sit her down in the exact place where he had been sitting.”* (al-Adab al-Mufrad, Page 406, Hadith 421)[3]
Her Asceticism, Simplicity, and Unparalleled Charity
Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) learned her gentle manners, refined speech, and deep compassion directly from her father. Her heart was entirely free from the love of the material world. She possessed no craving for the gold ornaments, luxurious clothes, or comfortable lifestyles of this life.
Her house was open to the poor, the orphans, and the captives. On numerous occasions, she and her family would be preparing to break a multi-day fast when a needy person would knock on their door. Without hesitation, Sayyidah Fatima would give away all their food, choosing to break her fast with mere water and remain hungry so that others could eat.
The Blessed Marriage to Sayyiduna Ali (Radi Allahu Anhu)
Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) was married to the Lion of Allah, Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib (Radi Allahu Anhu), at the beginning of the second year after the migration (Hijrah) to Madinah. At the time of this blessed union, she was nineteen years old, and Sayyiduna Ali was approximately twenty-one years old.
The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) personally performed their Nikah (marriage ceremony) and invoked special blessings of unity, prosperity, and pious lineage upon them.
Her Humble Dowry
Despite being the daughter of the leader of both worlds, her wedding gifts and household items presented by the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) were extremely simple and humble:
-
A wooden bed intertwined with palm leaves.
-
A velvet coverlet.
-
A leather cushion filled with the leaves of a desert plant (idhkher).
-
A sheepskin to sit upon.
-
A simple clay pot.
-
A leather water-skin.
-
A primitive, hand-operated stone mill (quern) for grinding grain.
The Gift of Tasbeeh-e-Fatimah
Because of the hard manual labor she performed—carrying heavy water-skins that left marks on her chest, and grinding grain with the hand-mill until her hands were covered in blisters—her husband, Sayyiduna Ali (Radi Allahu Anhu), suggested that she visit her father to request a servant from among the war captives.
Sayyidah Fatima went to her father’s house, but out of her immense modesty, she could not bring herself to state her request. Later that evening, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) came to their home, sat between them, and addressed their need, saying:
"ألا أخبرك ما هو خير لك منه ، تسبحين الله عند منامك ثلاثا وثلاثين ، وتحمدين الله ثلاثا وثلاثين ، وتكبرين الله أربعا وثلاثين"
*”Shall I not tell you of something far better for you than that which you asked of me? I am teaching you the words which the Archangel Jibra’eel (Alayhis Salam) has brought to me:
Before you go to sleep, you should say:
‘Subhan-Allah’ (Glory be to Allah) 33 times,
‘Alhamdulillah’ (Praise be to Allah) 33 times, and
‘Allahu Akbar’ (Allah is the Greatest) 34 times.”* (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5362)
This spiritual prescription is famously known as “Tasbeeh-e-Fatimah.” It provides spiritual, mental, and physical strength, bringing immense barakah (blessings) to anyone who recites it regularly.
The Prophet’s Final Illness and the Two Secret Whispers
In Ramadan of the 10th year of Hijrah, before embarking on his Farewell Pilgrimage, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) confided in Sayyidah Fatima:
“The Archangel Jibra’eel used to recite the Quran to me, and I to him, once every year, but this year he has recited it with me twice. I cannot but think that my time has come.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3426)[1]
Following his return, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) fell seriously ill. He was cared for in the apartment of his beloved wife, Sayyidah Ayesha (Radi Allahu Anha). Whenever Sayyidah Fatima came to visit, Sayyidah Ayesha would respectfully leave the room to allow the father and daughter privacy.
Sayyidah Ayesha (Radi Allahu Anha) narrated the profound incident that took place during those final days:
*”We, the wives of the Prophet, were gathered around him, and none of us was absent. Fatima came walking in her unique style, which perfectly resembled the walk of the Messenger of Allah. When he saw her, he welcomed her warmly, saying: ‘Welcome, my daughter.’
He made her sit on his right or left side, then whispered something secretly to her. Upon hearing it, she began to weep bitterly. Seeing her deep grief, he whispered to her secretly a second time, and she laughed.
I said to her: ‘The Messenger of Allah has singled you out from among all his family members for a secret, yet you weep.’ After the Prophet passed away, I adjured her by the right I had over her to tell me what he had said.
She replied: ‘Now, yes, I can tell you. The first time he whispered to me, he informed me that Jibra’eel used to review the Quran with him once a year, but this year it was twice, which indicated his approaching demise. He told me to fear Allah and be patient, and that he would be a blessed forerunner for me. Hearing this, I wept.
When he saw my grief, he whispered to me a second time and said: “O Fatima, are you not pleased that you shall be the Chief of the believing women of this Ummah, and the leader of the women in Paradise?” Upon hearing this, I laughed with joy.'”* (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 6467)[4]
Chief of the Ladies of Paradise (Sayyidatun Nisa Ahlil Jannah)
Sayyidah Fatima (Radi Allahu Anha) is established as the Chief of the Ladies of Paradise (Sayyidatun Nisa Ahlil Jannah), and her two noble sons, Imam Hasan (Radi Allahu Anhu) and Imam Husain (Radi Allahu Anhu), are the chiefs of the youths of Paradise.
Classical scholars note that while Sayyidah Fatima is the spiritual chief and leader of the women of this Ummah and the women of Paradise, the title of the Chief of the Women of the World historically went to Sayyidah Maryam (Alayhas Salam), as declared in the Holy Quran:
"وَإِذْ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَاصْطَفَاكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ"
“And when the Angels said: ‘O Maryam! Surely Allah has chosen you and purified you, and chosen you above all the women of the world.'” (Al-Quran, Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:42)[5]
Unshakable Faith in her Father’s Prophetic Knowledge
In another narration, Sayyidah Fatima explained her emotional transition from crying to laughing:
"سارني النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم فأخبرني أنه يقبض في وجعه التي توفي فيه فبكيت ثم سارني فأخبرني أني أول أهل بيته أتبعه فضحكت"
“He informed me secretly of his death, so I cried. He then informed me secretly that I would be the first from among his household to follow him, so I laughed.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3427; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2450)
This narration illustrates her absolute, unwavering faith in the words of her father. She knew with absolute certainty that his prediction would be fulfilled.
It also highlights her profound love for him: the news of her own fast-approaching death was not a source of fear or grief, but of joy, because it meant she would soon be reunited with him in the hereafter. True to the Prophet’s words, she passed away a mere six months after his demise.
