Like the Jewish calendar, the Islamic calendar is lunar. For a sum of 354 days, it comprises of 12 months of 29 or 30 days each.

(The month of Dhu al-Hijjah varies from 29 to 30 days to keep the calendar in line with the real phases of the moon, so some years have 355 days.)

However, unlike its Jewish equivalent, there is no corrective mechanism in the Islamic calendar to match it with the solar calendar.

Thus, Islamic holidays do not always fall in the same summer and they happen on the solar calendar sooner each year.
