Islamic Stories for Kids
the curry to cook on the stove. But I can assure you that besides water the curry has nothing in it. It’s a shame that the leader has no knowledge of this.
Umar But how do you expect the leader to know if he is not informed? Mother, It is the duty of the leader to be aware of all individuals living in his kingdom. If he cannot do this then he has no right to be a ruler.
I will complain to the Holy Prophet on the Day of Judgment regarding his negligent behavior. Umar began crying as he left the house, although the woman did not know that he was the leader.
He was crying at the fact that someone was not happy with his governance and was going to submit a formal complaint. He left the house and returned with a bag of flour. Umar thanked Allah for the flour. Companion O Umar! I plead with you to allow me to carry the burden but you refuse.
Umar O friend, will you help me carry my weight on the Day of Judgment? If not, then let me carry my own weight. Mother O brother! May Allah shower numerous blessings upon you, it looks as though you are an angel who has come to our aid in the form of a human. Umar Please leave the talking for later and let me perform my duties.
Umar then removed flour from the bag, prepared the dough, and made the bread. His Companion states that Umar then fed the kids and happily talked to them.
This produced a smile on their faces and the Companion heard Umar say, “the eyes that saw these children cry, have now seen them smiling.” Mother O lovely man! You are a genius, you have helped relieve my problems Umar O lady.
Are you happy now that your kids are fed? Will you then on my behalf forgive the Muslim leader for not paying attention to you? Could you ensure that you do not complain to the Holy Prophet on the Day of Judgment? Mother Why are you so worried about the leader? Umar First promise you that you have forgiven him, then I’ll tell ‘NOK Mother OK I forgive him.
But I pray that Allah removes him and makes you the leader instead. Umar O sister, your request to Allah is also true! Mother How can that be? Umar removed the veil that had been covering his face and revealed himself to the woman.
Umar O sister, look here. Mother, I can’t believe it is you, O Amir! Muntakab Kanzul Aamaal Hakayatul Sahaba The moving story that brings tears to the eyes of the believers shows the deep sincerity of Sayyiduna Umar.
His sense of justice and piety was such that he would not allow his Companion to take any responsibility that belonged to him. Umar teaches us to remember the fact that on the Day of Judgment we will give an account of all our deeds.
First aid
First aid Even though Sayyiduna Umar was the ruler of the Islamic Empire, there would be times at night when he would be patrolling the streets. Once he saw a tent that he had never been there before. When Umar got closer he saw that a man was sitting outside the tent, he approached the man, sent him greetings, and asked him where he had come from.
The man replied that he was a traveler and had come especially to talk to the leader of the Muslims about his requests. Umar then heard some sounds coming from the inside of the tent. He asked the man what the noises were he replied, “my wife is about to give birth the pains of labor have begun.”
Umar asked the man whether there was another woman nearby, but the man hadn’t seen anybody. Umar ran from the scene and went straight home. He told his wife where he had come from and what the situation was and that they have got a chance to earn a big reward from Allah.
They got the necessary items that would be needed and rushed back to the scene. Umar’s wife entered the tent whilst Umar lit a fire and put the curry to cook. Then Umar’s wife Umme Kulthum shouted from the tent that “O leader of the Muslims tell your friend that his wife has given birth to a baby boy.”
When the man heard Umar’s wife shout “leader of the Muslims” he began to panic. Sayyiduna Umar told the man not to panic and sent the food into the tent so that he and the new mother could eat. Asharul Mushahir Hakayatus Sahaba The people’s leader is the people’s helper.
Umar despite being a very powerful man helped all people whether they were rich or not, educated or not. Today’s leaders only look after themselves and only appear to look out for the interests of the people.
If more leaders governed today as Sayyiduna Umar did then the world would be a much better place.
Umar and the old lady
Umar and the old lady Sayyiduna Umar one day was patrolling the streets when he saw a tent with an old woman in it. He went up to it and asked the old lady about her views of the Leader of the Faithful. The woman not knowing it was Umar said ‘May Allah not do him good. Umar e asked the old lady why? She told the visitor that till this day Umar had not visited her in her poverty. Umar asked the lady how Umar was meant to know who lived at each and every place? The woman replied that the leader of the Ummah that has spread from the east to the west could not know what happens in front of him, How strange? Umar could take no more and weep. Umara then asked the old lady how much grain and provisions would it take to keep this complaint about Umar secret?
The old lady thought that the man was joking but the man was quite serious about the issue. The woman then said to the man to give her aE Dirhams. As this was happening Sayyiduna Ali and Ibn Mas’ud o said, “O Amir of the faithful! Asalaam Alaykum!” When the I lady heard the words ‘Amirul Mu’minin’ she began to panic and too worried.
She held her head in her hands and realized that the man she was talking to was Umar a. Sayyiduna Umar saw this reaction and told the old lady not to worry. “You have said absolutely correct about Umar! You have nothing to fear from me. The two wrote a ‘pact’ in the presence of Ali and Ibn Mas’ud that on the Day of Judgment the old woman will not complain to Allah as she had accepted the twenty-five Dirhams and that both accepted fault for their respective actions. Umar gave the twenty-five Dirhams to the old lady. He then gave the letter to his son and told him to place it in his grave when he passes away. The letter is in Umar’s grave. Haywatul Haiwan After reading this story we should start to reflect on the actions we have committed in our lives and start to make up for them. Both were concerned about facing Allah on the Day of Judgment. Are you ready for that day?
The tasty sweet-dish
The tasty sweet-dish During the time of Umar’s reign, the Muslims conquered Azerbaijan. Some gifts were brought in front of the Amirul Mu’minin.
He tasted some Halwa (sweet-dish) and then asked whether it was for him or everyone? The messenger who brought the Halwa said that it was for him alone. At once Umar wrote a letter which stated that the lands i.e. Azerbaijan that they had conquered were not only a result of their efforts alone or that of their fathers. But it was a result of all the Muslims’ collective effort.
Umar concluded by saying that the Leader of the Faithful will only eat that which is for all. Fatuhul Baldaan & Mugnial Wa’izeen those thỉngs that were to be shared amongst all people and not just for him. The tr Muslim thinks about others, not just himself.
Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab was following the Sunnah of his Rasul by accepting
The Conquest of Alexandria
The Conquest of Alexandria There was some delay in conquering Alexandria when Umar the Khalifa wrote to Amr ibn Al-Aas and told him to step up the campaign.
The command was followed and Alexandria was conquered and a messenger returned to Madinah with the good news. It was mid-afternoon and the messenger thought that maybe the leader is resting, therefore, did not give the news to Umar but headed towards Masjid Nabwi.
There he saw a woman to whom he gave the glorious news. The woman went to Umar’s house to give him the good news when the messenger Teacher there too.
Umar asked the messenger why he did not come to omer first. He replied that he did not want to disturb the Muslim leader t case he was having an afternoon nap. This made Umar angry.
“If I start resting during the day then who will serve the people?” Umar reflected on the news and thanked Allah. Fatuhul Baldaan & Mugnial Wa’izeen: demands more work and awareness from the leader than anyone else. Being the leader does not mean you live off the privileges and relax but is a role that
Umar’s dual concerns
the people and Judgment Day Savyiduna Umare worked tirelessly for the sake of his Prophet’s Ummah. The people saw this and appreciated it very much. In their concern for their leader, they suggested to him that he should take it easy and not burden himself too much.
Umar worked so hard that he was busy throughout the day and spent the whole night in worship with Allah. Umar listened to the people’s comments but told them that if he rested in the day then the people would not be happy and satisfied.
And if I slept in peace at night what sort of Companion am I if did not follow the Sunnah of Rasulallah and what would I say to Allah on the Day of Judgment? Kitab Mazkoor The Amirul Mu’minin has two concerns. One is serving the people and the other is to worship Allah. Umar was conscious of the fact that both tasks were equally important and demanded one hundred percent attention.
The Roman Ambassador
An ambassador from the Emperor of Rome came to meet Umar in Madinah. He asked “O people! Where is the palace of the caliph, that I may take my horse and baggage there?” The people said to him, “He has no palace.
Though he has great renown for being a commander (of the faithful) he has no dwelling except a hut like the poor.” When the ambassador of Rome heard this he became more anxious in meeting him. Further on, an Arab woman saw the stranger guest. “Look,” she said, “there is Umar under that palm tree.”
He came near and yet stood far off. He saw Umar and began to tremble. Awe came upon the ambassador from the slumbering Umar. He said to himself, “I have seen many kings, but never have I seen a man of great esteem and honor.”
The ambassador greeted Umar and enquired about the great religion of Islam. He became so impressed by the awe but humility of Umar that he accepted Islam straight away. Masnawi Sharif
This narration by Imam Rumi the great Sufi mystic describes the way the ambassador was amazed by the simplicity of Sayyiduna Umar who at the time was a leader of a superpower. It is the way of Islam to live simply whether you are rich or poor. Modesty is a key component in Islam. It is this attribute that shone in Umar and which led to the ambassador’s eventual acceptance of the truth.
Sayyiduna Umar and the thief
Sayyiduna Umar and the thief During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar ét a thief was caught stealing. Ho was taken to Sayyiduna Umar where it was proved that he did steal.
As a leader of the Muslims, Umar decided that the thief should have one of his hands chopped off as a punishment for his crime. The thief Spoke “O leader of the Muslims! This is my first offense.
Please forgive me” The other people present were also sympathetic to his plea and also asked Umar to go easy on him. But Umar knew better and said, “He is lying, this is not his first offense. Allah is very merciful in that he hides the sins of people. But this time this man must be dealt with justice.”
Necklace of Pearls We learn from this story that Allah Almighty hides the sins of people when they commit them the first time. But when people begin to repeatedly re-offend then this veil is lifted and his / her actions are exposed to other people. It then becomes necessary to deal with these people with justice according to Shariah. Umara knew that the man was lying and that the thief should be punished and not pardoned.
The Martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar
One night Umar had a dream that a red-colored bird had attacked him several times. He told this dream to the people in a religious sermon. The dream was interpreted that Umar would be martyred. Umar before the Fajr prayer straightened the rows, as was his habit.
When the prayer started Firoz stabbed Umar in the back causing Umar to fall. The attacker ran away but was eventually caught.
Firoz realized that he would be punished according to the Islamic Shariah and committed suicide, The prayer had not yet finished, so Umar asked Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf to continue the prayer and finished his own prayer sitting down. When the prayer finished Umar asked Ibn Abbas regarding the attacker. Abbas replied that it was Firoz. Umar thanked Allah that no Muslim had been involved.
The people surrounded Umar and gave him some drink, but to no effect. A young man came to see Umar and whist he walked away Umar saw his trousers dragging on the ground, he asked the boy to alter his trousers so that they wouldn’t pick up dirt from the ground and that Allah will be pleased with this act.
Umar then called upon his son Abdullah to go Sayyida Aisha and give her salam and then to present a request to be buried beside the Holy Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakr. Abdullah reached the House of Aisha and saw that she too was crying in grief over Umar. Abdullah gave Aisha his father’s message, she replied that she has kept that place for herself, but I give more to Umar’s life than my own and give permission for Umar to be buried in the Prophet’s Mosque. Abdullah went to give his father the good news.
Upon hearing the news, Umar told Abdullah, “when I did take my body to the door of Sayyida Aisha and if she grants permission again then bury me next to Abu Bakr, if not then bury in Baqee. After this Umar gave his son some important instructions. “Firstly, move my head from under the pillow so that my head touches the ground in prostration, so my Lord can have mercy on me. Secondly, when I did close my eyes. And thirdly, bury as quickly as you can, do not do any unnecessary delay.
“Umar said,“ O son if I had the wealth of the entire world then at this moment in time I would give it away to charity so that on the Day of Judgment I would have less weight to carry across the bridge. “On hearing this Ibn Abbas said,”
I swear by Allah. I have this belief in you O Umar because on the Day of Judgment you will be raised as the Amir of all the believers and as the Sayyid of all the believers too, You have governed according to the Book of Allah and to the principles of justice “.
Umar es was filled to hear these comforting ls on his deathbed. The people firmly believed that he had done his Umar was a very tough task, despite all the pain he got up from his bed and hugged Ibn Abbas, and asked him to repeat those words in front of Allah on the Day of Judgment. Ibn Abbas happily and willingly replied that he would.
Umar felt more comfort In his heart after hearing Ibn best to govern in the manner Abu Bakre had done before, which, for Abbas’s vow. After that Sayyiduna Umar began to dictate his will and his remaining, final wishes. Soon after the second rightful caliph of Islam Sayyiduna Umar passed away. ‘From Allah, we have come and to him is the sure return.
The funeral preparations began in earnest as Umar had wished. The funeral was placed in front of the Prophet’s tomb, Someone then said respectfully to Sayyida Aisha whether or not the funeral could go ahead and whether Umar could be burled near to the Holy Prophet & and Abu Bakre. Aisha e again gave permission and Umar was accordingly given the Janaza prayer and was buried next to the Prophet and Abu Bakr.
The day Umar left this world, the sun was clear to see but it was dull and discolored. The children of Madinah asked their mothers whether the Day of Judgment had arrived? The mothers of Madinah comforted their children by saying that Judgment Day had not come but their great caliph Umar had left this world. A few days later, Ibn Abbas met Umar in his dream.
He asked the late Amirul Mu’minin how Allah had accepted him. Umar replied wajuddto rabbt raheeman- I found my Lord to be most merciful. Seeratus Sallheen
The final moments in Umar’s worldly life were spent upholding the Shariah. Umar’s rule with justice and sincerity was recognized by his close friends who swore on Allah’s name that Umar had done a good job in looking after the Muslims.
Sayyiduna Uthman- the possessor of two lights
Sayyiduna Uthman- the possessor of two lights The Holy Prophet had four daughters, Sayyida Zainab, Ruqayya, Umme Kulthum, and Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them all). Ruqayya was married to Uthman, but when Ruqayya died, this upset Uthman. The Holy Prophet gave his second daughter Umm Kulthum to Uthman in marriage.
The Prophet said, “If I had one hundred daughters and one after the other they would die, then I would give them all to you O Uthman one by one in marriage.” No other person in the entire history of mankind has had the special honor of taking into marriage two of a messenger’s daughters. Uthman is affectionately known as Zun Nurayn, the possessor of two lights.
The modesty of Uthman
One day the Holy Prophet & was relaxing at his home. His blessed shin was visible and was exposed to the Madani sun. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr no to the door and sought the Nabi’s permission before entering. The Prophet and his close Companion then began to talk.
After a while. Savviduna Umar appeared at the doors of mercy and also joined in with the conversation. Up till this point, the Holy Prophet was lying down with his shin exposed. After a while, however, Uthman appeared. But before Uthman was given permission to join them, the Prophet got up and covered his shin and then called Uthman in to join the other close Companions. Sayyida Aisha saw all this happen.
When the three guests had left, Sayyida Aisha asked the Prophet about his special attention towards Uthman e and not the others including her father Abu Bakr? The Prophet replied humbly ‘O Aisha! Why should I not take due care in front of Uthman (because of his severe modesty) when all the angels Allah has created do so ‘! Mishkat Sharif The status of Sayyiduna Uthman is such that Allah’s angels and the leader of the Prophets e have a sense of modesty in front of him. Uthman was of a unique and exemplary character and anyone seeking faults in his life is immodest and immoral themselves.
Uthman the Generous
At the battle of Tabuk, the Holy Prophet was emphasizing to the Companions the importance of spending money in the path of Allah. Uthman was present in the congregation and said that he would provide one hundred camels with the necessary goods and donated them to the Muslims.
Later the Holy Prophet O made another request and this time Uthman donated two hundred camels and presented them to the Holy Prophet. Upon a third request, Uthman gave three hundred Camels with the necessary goods to the Muslims and on top of this gave one thousand dinars and presented it to the Holy Prophet. When the Holy Prophet saw the response of Uthman and he placed his hand on Uthman and thanked him for doing more than enough. Mishkat Sharif Uthman was a very pious and generous person. He was so generous that on the Holy Prophets command was willing to donate abundantly for the sake of Islam.
The Well of Paradise
When the Muslims migrated to Madinah, they saw that the water in Madinah was salty and undrinkable. They were having trouble finding water that was suitable for consumption. It so happened that a Jew owned a well who sold the water.
The Holy Prophet approached the owner and said, “how would you like to trade your well for a well in paradise.” The Jew replied, “this is the only thing I have to provide food for my kids as it is I am too weak to do anything else” When Uthman heard about this, he approached the owner of the well and bought the well from him for 35,000 dinars. He went to the Holy Prophet and said “O Prophet of Allah if I bought the well and donate to the Muslims will I get a well in paradise.”
The Holy Prophet gave bought the well and I donate it to the Muslims “Sayyiduna Uthman relieved the difficulties of his Muslim Companions by buying the well for their free disposal.
The Prophet made no hesitation in granting Uthman a lofty position in this world and the next for his generosity. replied positively to Uthman’s request, and then Uthman said “then I Tabarani Sharif.
The Blessed Hand
The Blessed Hand The Holy Prophet left with the Companions for Makkah, to perform Umrah, on the way came to a place called Hudaybiyya. At this point, the Holy Prophet sent Uthman to go and talk to the Hudaybiyya polytheists thát the Muslims had no intention of war and just want to perform the pilgrimage and return.
The Holy Prophet & asked Uthman to give hope o the Muslims of Makkah that soon the Muslims would claim victory and conquer Makkah. Uthman left the group and talked to the leaders of Makkah and presented to them the Holy Prophet’s request. The leaders gave a negative reply and said that they would not allow the Holy Prophet or the Companions to enter Makkah.
But they told Uthman that if he wished, permission would be granted for him to perform his religious duties. But Uthman replied, “This cannot be possible that I would perform the Tawaf of the Ka’ba without the presence of the Holy Prophet.” He then left the meeting and went to the old and sick Muslims unable to migrate the blessed news that Makkah would soon be under the control of the Muslims.
The Companions meanwhile who were still at Hudaybiyya started to say how lucky Uthman must be, who by now will have visited Makkah and performed the Tawaf of Ka’ba. But the Holy Prophet said, “Uthman would never perform Tawaf in my absence.”
It so happened that Uthman’s return from the meeting took longer than anticipated, and a rumor went around that the people of Makkah had slaughtered Uthman. When the Muslims heard this, their hearts started boiling with a vengeance and the Holy Prophet took an oath from the Muslims for battle against the non-believers.
As Uthman was not present in this oath, the Holy Prophet raised his left hand and said, “This is the hand of Uthman, and we are taking an oath on his behalf” Khazahinul Irfan & Tarikhul Khulafa The Holy Prophete when taking the Bay ‘ a (oath of allegiance) from his Companions underneath the tree took his hand as Uthman’s and took the Bay’s for him. Such an honor was bestowed upon Uthman that no other person can claim. One of the achievements of Sayyiduna Uthman was that he helped gather the entire Qur’an in one book.
The oath then was a sign of approval and blessings for Uthman so he could achieve this task. So whoever doubts the achievement of Uthman in this respect ultimately doubts the validity of the Qur’an and its revelation. In the light of this, those who oppose Uthman as some people did later on in his life is in actual fact oppose the Prophet. The enemy of Uthman is then the enemy of Allah, so the love and respect for Uthman is an essential component of belief in Islam.
Uthman teaches us that the Tawaf of the Ka’ba is nothing without the presence of the Holy Prophet. The Companions began to speculate on the fortunes of Uthman as he was one of the first Companions after many years to see the Ka’ba again. But for Uthman e this privilege was worth little without the presence of his Master.
An unmatched invitation
One day Uthman invited the Holy Prophet to come to his house for dinner with his Companions. The Holy Prophet accepted the invitation and when the day came, he along with the Companions made to the house of Uthman.
Uthman followed the Holy Prophet as he left his blessed house and started counting his footsteps. The Holy Prophet asked Uthman what he was doing. Uthman replied, “O Prophet of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed, I want for your every footstep to my house to free one slave.”
Thus whatever the number came to, that was the number of slaves that Uthman freed. Ja’mial Mujizaat Uthman was very wealthy and was amongst the most generous persons in the history of Islam. He was also a true follower and lover of the Holy Prophet. The Prophet did not oppose this action of Sayyiduna Uthman. He never told him to do such a thing. It was the Companions’ profound love and respect for the Imam of the Prophets that led them to do such actions.
Missing ring
Sayyiduna Uthman had the Holy Prophet’s dowry which was ring ich had engraved on it “Muhammad ur-Rasul Allah.” One day, when he was Khalifa, whilst sitting beside the well the ring slipped out of his hand and fell into the well.
The well was very deep and Uthman was upset and announced that if anybody could find the ring then he would get a reward of 100,000 dinars. But despite numerous efforts, the ring was never found.
The ring was a source of luck and protection for Uthman and when it was lost he felt that things were turning against him. The people of Madinah were now coming to Uthman with little, petty complaints, and were trying to find faults so that they could overthrow him.
There were people in Madinah that were involved in killing pigeons as a sport, when they were told to stop, the hunters all turned against Uthman. Amongst this, a few other things occurred that without any reason turned people against Uthman. Seeratus Saliheen
This story was the start of Uthman’s road to martyrdom. Uthman knew that he would be martyred. One day the Holy Prophet was standing on a mountain with Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. Whilst on the mountain they felt a tremor and the Holy Prophet said, “O Mountain stop moving because on you stands a prophet, a truthful and two martyrs.
Also, the Holy Prophet had once told Uthman the exact details of how his death would occur, therefore once the ring was lost, Uthman could sense that the time was nearing his death.
The Jewish factor
Abdullah ibn Sabah was a hypocrite (Jew) who went around emphasizing his piety, which was nothing more than an act. the people of Arabia knew him, he traveled to Basra and later to Kufa. But his luck in turning people against Uthman was unsuccessful so he decided to go to Faypt, Upon reaching Egypt he started preaching by saying “Tell me, is Rasulallah’s rank higher, or is Isa’s (Jesus) higher? The people replied that Rasulallah’s rank is higher.
When Abdullah ibn Sabah heard this answer he said,” If that was the case why is it that Isa will come nearer doomsday to help the Muslims overcome the non-believers so why won’t Muhammad come and help, and how can this be ?! The people listening to his manipulating speeches were confused and some even agreed with what he was saying.
When the Jew saw this he decided to go a step further and said, “Every Prophet has a successor, and the Holy Prophet’s successor is Ali, therefore he should be ruling the Islamic Empire, not Uthman. Uthman has taken over the leadership.
Our aim should be to overthrow Uthman and make Ali the leader. ” But this Jew being a manipulative liar had no allegiance towards Mawla Ali. His intention was to create confusion and schisms between the Muslims.
He was such a good orator that people began to ask him how they would get rid of Uthman. His plan was to write letters of complaints about the local ministers and to send the letters to nearby states so that the complaints would be widespread.
The People of Basra were also amongst those who had joined the conspiracy. It so happened that the plan was so effective that the people wrote to the leader of the Muslims Uthman saying, “You are sitting peacefully, whilst you’re ministers are punishing us and treating us unfairly.”
Uthman replied that if this were the case then when his ministers come to Makkah for Hajj he would investigate the issue and perform justice. When the ministers arrived, they were asked regarding their rule. They replied, “O leader of the Muslims we have not indulged in any act which is against Islam, this letters are nothing but a conspiracy to cause trouble.” As the people who complained failed to show up and speak to Uthman, he knew that this whole issue was an attempt in creating fitna. Seeratus Saliheen
The Jews who wanted the Muslims to fight amongst themselves started this conspiracy against Uthman. We can see today how the Jews cause dissent amongst two groups which leads to conflict.
Change of Governor
Ibn Sabah’s efforts had an impact on the people of Basra and Kufa, which turned them against Uthman. One day the people of Basra sent a letter of complaint, which Uthman replied to. But then more letters started arriving and Uthman did not reply to those, as they had no ground upon which to base their arguments. When there was no reply, Ibn Sabah sent 1500 people to Makkah from Basra. These people left with the intention of assassinating Uthman but told the people when asked that they were going only to perform Hajj.
These 1500 soldiers surrounded Madinah. When Uthman learned of their intention he asked Ali to talk to them and give them his message, “Do not bury your hands in my blood, what is that you desire? Talk to me, I will listen.” Ali stopped the group and said, “What exactly are your intentions for coming here in such a manner.”
The people told Ali that they wanted the governor of Egypt to be sacked and in his place, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr should be the governor of Egypt. Uthman agreed to this and the group returned. Tarikhul Khulafa; Seeratus Saliheen
The Jews again created conflict within the Muslims. Ali was acting as the guardian of Uthman and put an end to their plan with immense force. It is a narrated that Ali said to Uthman “O leader of the Muslims, give me permission to fight against these rebels.
Uthman replied” Ali I do not wish that blood is spilled in Madinah because of me. This shows the respect and honor Uthman had for the City of the Prophet.
The forged letter
When Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr was appointed the governor of Egypt, the previous government had a relative whose name was Marwan, This person was also related to Uthman. Marwan was upset that his relation had been sacked and Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr appointed as his replacement. As a result, Marwan wrote a letter addressed to the governor of Egypt. However, he signed the letter as if Uthman had sent the letter from Madinah. The letter said, “O governor of Egypt, when Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr comes to you, slaughter him.”
To prove the authenticity of the letter he managed to stamp it with Uthman’s personal stamp. He got one of Uthman’s slaves and sent him to Egypt with the letter. When the slave was on his journey he met numerous people, they all asked where he was going, he replied “I have a message for the governor of Egypt.” The people replied, “the governor of Egypt is amongst us what have you got for him.”
The slave replied that he had nothing but the travelers were not satisfied and they searched him. They found the letter and read it. It said, “Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr has been appointed governor by force and when he reaches Egypt slaughter him and those accompanying him.” When the people read this they were shocked and upset.
They carried onto Madinah and read out the letter to the inhabitants of Madinah. The people of Madinah took the letter to Uthman and asked whether it was he who had written the letter, Uthman said that he had no knowledge of such a thing, and would never dream of writing such a thing.
The people then started asking questions. Is this camel yours? Uthman replied “Yes”. Does the Slave belong to you? Again Uthman said, “Yes” is the stamp yours? Again Uthman replied, “Yes.” “Then how can it be that this letter is not
