Wudu (ablution) is a beautiful physical and spiritual purification process in Islam. To perform it perfectly, it is important to know which actions are highly recommended (Mustahab) and which actions should be avoided (Makrooh).
Here is a simple guide to help you perfect your Wudu.
🚫 When Does Wudu Become Makrooh?
There are certain actions that are considered “Makrooh” (undesirable or disliked) in Wudu. Committing them does not break the Wudu, but it decreases its spiritual reward.
Try to avoid the following actions:
-
Unclean Environment: Making Wudu in a dirty or impure place.
-
Wrong Hand Usage: Cleansing the nose using the right hand (the left hand should be used).
-
Worldly Talk: Talking about worldly things or having unnecessary conversations while making Wudu.
-
Changing the Sequence: Performing Wudu out of the prescribed order (for example, washing the feet first and then the face).
-
Wasting Water: Using more water than necessary (Israaf).
-
Using Too Little Water: Using so little water that certain parts are left dry or not washed properly.
-
Splashing Water: Slapping or splashing water forcefully onto the face.
-
Unnecessary Help: Asking someone for physical help to make Wudu without a valid medical reason or excuse.
✨ The Mustahabs (Preferable Acts) of Wudu
“Mustahab” refers to actions that are highly preferable and rewarding, though leaving them out does not invalidate the Wudu. Adding these to your routine brings greater blessings.
Here are the preferable acts to include:
-
Facing the Qiblah: Sit facing the Qiblah while performing Wudu. (Note: Ensure you do not spit water towards the Qiblah).
-
Clean Environment: Always make Wudu in a clean and pure place.
-
Reciting Bismillah: Reading “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah) before washing each individual part.
-
Reciting Du’as: Reading the specific and proper Du’as while washing each part.
-
Starting from the Right: Always wash the right side first before the left side (e.g., right arm before left arm).
-
Moving Jewelry: Shifting or rotating rings, bangles, or watches to ensure water reaches the skin underneath them.
-
Using the Left Hand: Cleaning the nostrils strictly with the left hand.
-
Cleaning the Ears: Properly cleaning the inside and outside of the ears (Khilal).
-
Post-Wudu Recitations: After completing Wudu, looking towards the sky to recite the Kalimah Shahadah, the post-Wudu Du’a, and Surah Al-Qadr.
